Meet my grandmother Bess

Introduction

I would like to introduce my grandmother to you. Her name is Elizabeth but all her friends seemed to call her Bess. Grandpa always called her 'Bossy Bessy'. I helped my mom take care of Grandma until she passed away this past March. March 4 2004. She was born on March 5 1912.

What I would like to share about my Grandmother Bess

When people met my grandmother, their first impressions were that she was a quiet, polite, sheltered woman. She dressed very prim and proper and was very eloquent in a simple way.

Everyone that got to know her though, was so amazed at her level of wisdom and knowledge. She didn't talk too much about herself, but I've learned that Grandma experienced enough of life to acquire a very tolerant view on most things. She did not judge people. She was a very calm listener and would only give advice after being invited to do so.

My Grandma Bess's Favorite Quote

I don't really know if Grandma had a favorite quote. She did have favorite songs, which she sang or whistled all the time. Once in a while she'd quote a verse from her songs. She used to sing, 'This Little Light of Mine' to me all the time. And when I was in a blue or sad mood, she'd remind me not to hide my light under 'neath the bushel basket.

Words of Wisdom

Grandma had lots of words of wisdom. She'd say things like, "The secret to life is to allow time for play, get your chores done first thing and then play" When I got married, she pulled me to the side and said, "Love your man tomorrow as you love him today, even if he wakes up tomorrow with a wart you didn't see before." And when we had our first child, she said, "You are a family now. No one else and nothing else should ever be more important than the three of you."

My Grandma's Favorite Recipe

Grandma was a baker. She made pies, breads, cookies and all of that. She raised 7 children and even when it was just her and grandpa, she baked like everyone was still home. She was always in the kitchen. I never thought to ask her to teach me. Grandma never used recipe cards, nor did she used measuring cups or measuring spoons. She measured with her palm and her fingers. After she passed, we were cleaning out her home and found the freezer full of baked goods. I wish they would keep forever. Warming them up these past few weeks for my family brought Grandma Bess back home to us. She captured love in her baking somehow. You feel it.

In Closing

Grandma was a strong independent woman with purpose. She thought of herself and her needs, after everyone she loved was tended to first. She always had time for everyone. Strangers even. She didn't try to impose herself on anyone. She just made herself available. I will miss her and so will my children. Thank you so much for allowing me to share a snippet of my Grandma Bess.
