Nursing Homes and Rehab or Rehabilitation Facilities are not only for the elderly, they also serve those with disabilities and those convalescing of any age.

Another word to describe a nursing home or rehab facility is known as Continuum Care. Hospitals normally offer skilled units for short stays to provide rehabilitation therapy after an injury or surgery.

The type of care may range from long-term to short-term stays.

Long-term stays are appropriate for the elderly person that can no longer safely remain at home and need more assistance with his or her daily living activities (ADL's) than permitted at an assisted living facility.

Daily living activities include the need to assist with bathing, toileting, eating, dressing, and mobility.

Short-term stays can be for many reasons. There may be situations and times where you, the family caregiver, will need to take a week or a week-end away from your caregiving role. Respite care refers to you, it simply means giving you 'respite' or time off.

Another example of a short-term stay is when the elderly person is admitted to complete rehabilitation. This may occur after a surgery or an injury. A 'care plan' that describes what types of therapy will be offered along with the goal of the therapy is written.

The care plan and the observations of how well a person is responding to therapy is discussed during the 'care plan meetings'. The care plan meetings will include all the therapists that have been working with your loved one.

This may include; Occupational therapy, Speech therapy, Physical therapy, the assigned Social Worker and so on. You are always invited to these meetings and it is your right to be there.
