County and State Services for Older Adults Local-Links

New York State Office for the Aging The mission of the New York State Office for the Aging is to help older New Yorkers to be as independent as possible for as long as possible through advocacy, development and delivery of person-centered, consumer-oriented, and cost-effective policies, programs and services which support and empower the elderly and their families, in partnership with the network of public and private organizations which serve them.

Administration on Aging (AoA)AOA is part of the Department of Health & Human Services, administers and funds programs and services for older people. The web site has a wealth of information, including government policy updates, fact sheets, health information, resources.

Area Agencies on Aging Local offices for the aging provide assistance to seniors and caregivers. Offices are located in every county, the City of New York and the Seneca Nation and St. Regis Mohawk Indian Reservations.

County Departments of Social Services New York State is divided into fifty-eight local social services districts. The five boroughs of New York City comprise one district. Outside of New York City each district corresponds to one of the fifty-seven counties that make up the remainder of the state. County Departments of Social Services (DSS) provide or administer the full range of publicly funded social services and cash assistance programs.

GovBenefits.gov helps citizens access government benefit eligibility information through a free, confidential, and easy-to-use online screening tool. After answering some basic questions, the user receives a customized report listing of local-links of the benefit programs for which the user, or person for whom he or she is entering information, may be eligible.

Benefits Checkup helps thousands of people every day to connect to private or government programs that help them pay for prescription drugs, health care, utilities, and other needs.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA)Provides information on medications, health care and nutrition, as well as other information geared specifically toward older people.

Social Security, Veteran's Administration, Medicare, Medicaid Local-Links

Medicaid is a program that provides health care services to individuals that meet the requirements for income, resources and citizenship. Individuals may apply for Medicaid at any local DFCS office, by mail, telephone, fax, e-mail, or at designated agencies.

Find your local Social Security Office by typing in your zip code. The Social Security Office can tell you about Retirement Benefits, Disability Benefits, Medicare Part D, Medicare and Medicaid, and Survivors Benefits.

Division of Veteran's Affairs Complete listing of local VA offices in your county. The function of the Division of Veterans Affairs is to assist veterans and their families in the presentation, processing, proof and establishment of claims, privileges, rights and benefits as they may be entitled to under Federal, State or local laws.

Legal Assistance, Safety, Crime, Elder Abuse Local-Links

NY Long-Term Care Ombudsman's Offices This program helps improve the quality of life of residents in nursing homes and personal care homes by acting as residents’ independent advocate. Ombudsman staff and volunteers informally investigate and resolve complaints on behalf of residents. They visit long-term care facilities to be accessible to residents and monitor conditions.

Adult Protective Services New York State's Protective Services for Adults program, provided through local county departments of social services, has been created by law to aid in the protection of impaired adults over the age of 18 who may be falling victim to abuse.

HIICAP, Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program, is the New York State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). It receives federal funds from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to operate a statewide network of local programs.
