Market rent simply means the rental fee each month is the amount determined to be 'fair' in this geographical area. Subsidized rent is a sliding scale, based on your income. There is clearly a senior housing shortage for this particular type of housing. After your application has been approved, you can expect to remain on the waiting list, anywhere from a few months to years. Independent living descriptions vary, as the options are many. Group HomesA group home may offer a private or semi-private bedroom with the living areas shared with other seniors. Group homes might be a good idea if you like the feeling a house provides. Meals are usually shared together in the dining room giving value to socializing, especially for those that had been living alone for a while. Group homes are licensed facilities, much like a foster home license. You meet the other residents and the group home sponsor before you make a decision to move in. There are group homes sponsored by families, and so there may be children. For some seniors, children are a welcomed addition, while others, prefers a home without them. Continuum Care Continuum care facilities are usually large campus-style communities with all levels of care available on the same grounds. A continuum care facility will have independent housing, assisted living, possibly adult day services and then a nursing home or skilled nursing unit. Apartments and CondominiumsApartments or condominiums are freestanding buildings or clusters, specializing in rentals to those 55 and over. Typically, you will find everything from an efficiency apartment all the way up to three bedrooms. Senior Housing will cater to the active older adult with activities and day trips of interest to the healthier active adult. Congregate LivingOther kinds of retirement communities may also include Congregate Living. In this style of independent living, you will have a similar situation to that of a group home. These facilities are not in houses, rather in a building. They will accommodate a larger population than that of a group home. Private bedrooms are the norm, and you will find that the community shares the living areas. Meals are shared in the dining room, as in the group home. LocationLocation is important when choosing independent living. Consider what types of services, shopping, banking and so forth are important to you. Do you still drive or is public transportation important to you? Most of the time, independent senior housing requires that you are in good health and can manage all of your own personal care. Should you need assistance, now or later on, you will be required to contract those services on your own.
