Seniors Approve Free Web Community Welcomes Gloria Anne
IntroductionHi, my name is Gloria Anne but most people tend to refer to me as Glory. I am 79 years old and a retired schoolteacher. I taught kindergarten through second grade back when all three classes were in the same room. It was a good experience for the children sharing class time this way. The older children had to help teach the younger ones, which was a wonder method to reinforce what they had learned.
What's on My MindI live in a community where the tax levy for our school system was up for vote in November. It failed. If the city and the state officials don't wake up to the response of the taxpayer, our schools are doomed. The voters are not saying that they won't support education. They are saying, 'Handing more money over to a group that has historically mismanaged their budgets will not help our children.'
Those in charge must realize that creative solutions are out there and must be looked at. I have yet to meet a public school superintendent with the essential business savvy needed to survive in our economy. Education belongs to the educator, running a school in the black requires economics. What I would like to share about myselfI believe that the greatest gift one person can pass to another is the gift of reading and the love of knowledge. A child that is raised in an environment of books will love to read. If a person can read and comprehend what is being read, that person can do anything he or she chooses to do in life. Reading opens the door to endless possibilities.
Please don't tell me that this gift is only available to the wealthy. Our libraries are terribly under used. I was raised in a frugal home as money was very tight. Our family used the library and I and my brothers and sisters each had our own library cards. My Favorite Quote"The doors of wisdom are never shut", 1700's by Ben Franklin
Words of WisdomA dear friend of mine, who is 96 years old, recently received a visit from a social worker sent by a concerned neighbor. The social worker, a twenty-something young lady, was determined to point out the dangers of my friend living alone. She assumed that since he was 96 he wasn't aware of possible hazards in his home, a home he has lived in for over 60 years. He said this to her, "I am quite aware of the possibility of falls and of other potential safety issues. In fact, I stay out of bed as much as possible. Bed is a very DANGEROUS place; more people die in bed than anywhere else."
My Favorite RecipeI love big pots of soup, any kind. A big pot of soup is best when shared with friends. I now make my soups and take them to a shelter or one of the churches in my neighborhood that serve meals. Most of my friends have passed on and since I still love soup and love sharing the soup, this seems to work for me.
My favorite is vegetable beef soup. This is my secret recipe. Day One: Bake a roast with just a bit of water and one large onion sliced. (Choose a roast from the market with marbled fat, but not too much. If confused, buy the roast that costs the most per pound, that's usually the best one) As you are baking this, keep tin foil on top and slowing bake at 325 degrees. Once cooked, enjoy some and put the rest in the refrigerator. Keep the broth and store separately. Day Two: Place leftover roast in a big pot. (Shred with fingers so the pieces are bite size) Scrape any fat off the top of the broth you saved yesterday and add this to the pot with enough water to fill your pot half full. Add one beef bouillon for each cup of water you added. I like potatoes in my soup, this is when you add potatoes, peeled or not, cut in bite size. Boil this mixture until potatoes are just getting soft. Add several stalks celery, bite size. Make sure you use the green leaves - adds great flavor. Add carrots if you like at this point. Your water should not be at a boil point now, just simmering. Once these vegetables are soft then you add all your leftover vegetables. (If you don't have leftovers, use frozen or canned) Now, add one large can of V-8 juice. This should take your stock to the top of your pot. If not, add a bit more water, using one beef bouillon for each cup of water added. Sprinkle a little fresh rosemary. This soup is very good but much better the second day. It's a great way to use leftovers as anything goes. Beans are great in this soup. We always had this soup at the end of a week, when leftovers were accumulated.
