Adult-group-homes are similar to assisted living facilities and independent senior housing. There are differences and it is those differences that make this type of senior housing a wonderful option for many seniors and older adults.

What should you expect from adult-group-homes?

Adult Group Homes offer a more intimate environment than a large assisted living facility, and for some seniors it is the perfect choice.

Group homes are licensed by the state in which the home is located, each state has its own regulations. Seniors Approve only recommends adult-group-homes that have successfully completed the Senior Approved Services independent survey.

In most cases, an adult group home may accept as little as one senior and as many as six.

Each senior will have their own bedroom and then will share the remainder of the house; the living room, dining room and kitchen.

The home may be occupied by a family. This family may consist of just one person, the host, and this is often times a single older adult that has opened his or her home up for this purpose.

Quite often, the host family is a family with children. Living in a home with children, for some seniors, is a wonderful benefit.

It is important that you take the time and get to know your host family before moving in. You must feel as though you will feel comfortable living in the home, shared by the host family and the other seniors already living there.

Prior to becoming licensed as a group home, the host must attend and complete special classes. The house itself is inspected to ensure a safe environment.

Some homes are private and are self-pay. There are adult group homes that are sponsored, in part, by your local department of aging services. In these cases, you will find adult group homes with subsidized payment schedules.

Seniors are generally required to present the ability to care for themselves, needing little assistance. If you require personal care (help with bathing, dressing and using the bathroom) an adult group home will not be appropriate for you in most cases.

Some adult group homes will allow you to reside if you do need additional one-on-one care. Some will provide this extra care for an additional fee, others may request that you hire private help.

The rent in an adult group home includes your meals and utilities. The average for self-pay is around $1,100.00 - $1,800.00 a month, some are lower, some are higher. It depends on location and the state where the home is licensed. The subsidized rent of a group home sponsored by your Department of Aging is based on your income.

Many local governments have a very long waiting list for subsidized adult group homes. Some actually have stopped taking applications due to budget cuts.

There is, in fact, a shortage of group homes. Seniors Approve actively speaks with homeowners who are living alone and have the space of a large home encouraging the homeowner to consider becoming a licensed adult group home.

Many seniors are living alone and the socialization of being part of a 'family' so-to-speak can be a healthy alternative to solitude.
